We have had extraordinary talent in our lifetime. It’s always unfortunate when these greats pass away early. We will always remember the joy their voices gave us and we will continue to sing their songs. In honor of Black Music Month, Madame Noire and MetroPCS want to highlight some of the artists that are gone, but not forgotten.
Whitney Houston
Inspired by artists like Roberta Flack, Whitney’s voice was unstoppable. She began performing in church in New Jersey as a pre-teen. Exposed to different venues with her mother, Cissy Houston, Whitney was soon to be discovered for her voice, her charm, and her beauty.
Creating hits like “I’m Your Baby Tonight”, “The Greatest Love Of All”, she had 7 consecutive #1’s on the Billboard Hot 100 list. Whitney was a force to be reckoned with. Sadly, Whitney passed away in 2012 and the entire world mourned the loss of one of the world’s greatest.
Aaliyah
Aaliyah, dubbed the “Princess of R&B”, left us way too soon. A singer and actress, her signature swag – tomboy with sex appeal was loved by teenagers around the world. Aaliyah’s infectious smile and cool dance moves had us all trying to be like her. Hits like “Are You That Somebody?” and “Rock The Boat” topped the charts, selling over 25 million albums, “Baby Girl” is definitely missed.
Prince
Who didn’t love Prince? A standout artist, he had major sex appeal, created a new sound, and was a musical genius. Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Prince was born to musician parents so music was engrained in him. Prince was signed at 18 years old and took the music industry by storm becoming one of the most celebrated artists.
We miss Whitney, Prince & Aaliyah and many more. Thank you Metro PCS for helping us celebrate artists that are gone but not forgotten.
